Bristol WORKS Supporting Pages and Young People Sub-Pages Case Study
After creating the main audience pathways for Young People, Schools and Education Providers, Employers and Projects, Xelium Ltd developed a series of supporting pages designed to take visitors further into the Bristol WORKS website.
Third instalment in the case studies series for Bristol WORKS web development. This time, we focus on supporting pages and sub pages. The pages under Young People are particularly important for young people, as they needed more detailed information and guidance to help them make informed choices about future careers and training. At the same time, several key top-level pages were created to support the wider Bristol WORKS website, including About Us, News, Contact Us and the Pledge page.
Extending the Audience-Led Website Structure
Together, these pages completed the website structure and helped transform Bristol WORKS from a simple information site into a more complete and audience-focused digital platform.
1. Young People Sub-Page: Career Options
Link: https://www.bristolesl.com/bristolworks/welcome/young-people/career-options/
The Career Options page was designed to help young people explore the wide range of careers available across the Bristol region. Many students know very little about the industries and employers around them, so the page was created to raise awareness and encourage curiosity.
Top Fold
The page opens with a clear introduction explaining that there are many different career pathways available and that Bristol WORKS can help young people explore them.
The messaging is positive and encouraging, helping visitors feel that there are many opportunities open to them.
Industry Grid
The main feature of the page is a 3 x 2 grid of industry panels. Each panel highlights a different employment sector:
- Film, TV and Creative Media
- Environment and Sustainability
- Construction, Engineering and Property
- Optometry
- Sports
- Public Sector
This grid creates a visually engaging layout and makes the page easy to browse. Rather than presenting careers information as a long list of text, the use of large, image-led panels encourages visitors to click and explore.
Each industry panel links to a dedicated resource page featuring:
- Short films and videos
- Career journey stories
- Shared experiences from people working in the sector
These industry-focused films are an especially important part of the design.
They help young people:
- Learn about jobs they may never have considered
- Understand the different routes into each industry
- Hear directly from people working in those roles
- See that there are real opportunities available locally
The use of video content makes the information feel more engaging, accessible and relatable than written content alone.
From a design perspective, the Career Options page successfully combines clear navigation with inspirational content.
2. Young People Sub-Page: Apprenticeships
Link: https://www.bristolesl.com/bristolworks/welcome/young-people/apprenticeships/
The Apprenticeships page was created to provide straightforward guidance for young people considering apprenticeships.
For many students, apprenticeships can feel confusing or unfamiliar. The purpose of this page was therefore to explain the basics clearly and provide useful next steps.
Top Fold
The page begins with a clear top section introducing apprenticeships and immediately answering the question:
“Here’s what you need to know about Apprenticeships”
This simple and direct wording helps make the topic feel less intimidating.
The introduction explains:
- What an apprenticeship is
- How apprenticeships combine work and training
- Why apprenticeships can be a valuable alternative to other routes
The tone is deliberately practical and reassuring.
Useful Resources
The page also includes a section linking to useful external resources.
These links provide young people with:
- More detailed information
- Guidance on finding apprenticeship opportunities
- Advice on applications and next steps
Including resource links makes the page more useful and positions Bristol WORKS as a helpful guide rather than simply an information provider.
The Apprenticeships page therefore works as both an introduction and a signposting page, helping visitors continue their journey.
3. Supporting Top-Level Page: About Us
Link: https://www.bristolesl.com/bristolworks/about-us/
The About Us page was designed to explain the purpose, values and approach of Bristol WORKS. This page helps visitors understand the organisation behind the website and provides important context for the work being carried out.
Top Fold
The page opens with a strong introduction explaining the mission of Bristol WORKS.
The content focuses on the organisation’s aims and objectives, particularly its aspirational goal of helping reduce the number of young people who are:
- Not in Education
- Employment
- Training
This NEET reduction objective gives the page a clear sense of purpose and social impact.
Aims and Objectives
The page explains how Bristol WORKS works with employers, schools and young people to:
- Raise aspirations
- Improve employability
- Support better outcomes for young people
Presenting these aims clearly helps strengthen trust and reinforces the wider value of the organisation.
Our Process
One of the strongest features of the page is the “Our Process” section.
This uses three simple stages, each supported by imagery:
- Engage
- Inspire
- Employ
The three-step approach makes the Bristol WORKS process easy to understand and memorable.
The accompanying images also help break up the page and make the content more visually engaging.
Our Delivery
The page also includes an “Our Delivery” section explaining how Bristol WORKS turns its aims into practical action.
This section helps demonstrate that the organisation is not just setting goals, but actively delivering real projects and opportunities.
4. Supporting Top-Level Page: News
Link: https://www.bristolesl.com/bristolworks/news/
The News page was designed to keep the website active, current and regularly updated.
Top Fold
The page opens with a simple introduction to the latest news, success stories and events.
The main body of the page lists recent posts and updates.
These include:
- Success stories
- Project updates
- Events
- News from schools and employers
This section is valuable because it:
- Demonstrates that Bristol WORKS is active and ongoing
- Provides fresh content for returning visitors
- Helps build credibility
- Supports search engine visibility through regularly updated content
The News page also creates more opportunities to highlight the impact of Bristol WORKS and share examples of successful partnerships.
5. Supporting Top-Level Page: Contact Us
Link: https://www.bristolesl.com/bristolworks/contact-us/
The Contact Us page was designed to make it easy for visitors to get in touch.
Top Fold
The page includes:
- A contact form
- Contact details
- Clear instructions on how to make an enquiry
The design keeps the page simple and focused, reducing barriers for visitors who want to ask a question or request support.
The page supports all audiences across the website, including young people, schools and employers.
6. Supporting Top-Level Page: Pledge
https://www.bristolesl.com/bristolworks/contact-us/pledge/
The Pledge page provides a dedicated route for employers to make a pledge and support Bristol WORKS.
Pledge Form
The page contains a simple and straightforward pledge form.
This allows employers to quickly express an interest in becoming involved and identify the type of support they are able to offer.
Keeping the form simple is an important design decision because it:
- Reduces friction
- Encourages more employers to complete it
- Makes the process feel quick and accessible
The Pledge page supports the wider goal of the website by turning employer interest into practical action.
Design Strengths Across the Supporting Pages
The supporting pages all follow the same overall design principles established on the homepage and main audience pages.
Across the website, Xelium created:
- Clear page structures with strong top sections
- Focused content tailored to the intended audience
- Consistent use of imagery and calls to action
- A logical flow from information to action
- A unified look and feel across all sections
The Career Options and Apprenticeships pages are especially important because they extend the support available to young people and encourage deeper engagement with the website.
The About Us, News, Contact Us and Pledge pages then provide the organisational information and supporting functions needed to complete the user journey.
Together, these pages helped create a fully rounded and effective website for Bristol WORKS.
