The Brief
Following the development of its lifestyle apparel collection, Lodge of Honour wanted to take its merchandise offering a step further by introducing a customisation service for Freemasonry Lodges. The idea was to allow individual Lodges to order their own branded apparel, featuring the traditional Square and Compass emblem embroidered in gold alongside their Lodge name and number.
The service needed to cater for different requirements, from Lodges ordering matching polo shirts for their members to groups purchasing customised hoodies and sweatshirts for anniversaries, special occasions, charity events and social gatherings. There were several practical considerations.
Customers needed to be able to choose garment styles, colours and sizes, submit their Lodge details, review their customised design and complete their order online. The ordering process also needed to accommodate bulk purchases, mixed sizes and colours, while making the design and digitisation process straightforward and affordable.
Xelium partnered with Lodge of Honour No. 379 in Bath to develop a dedicated online personalisation and ordering experience, supported by the e-commerce infrastructure of Colour My Days.
The Solution
Xelium designed and developed a dedicated Custom Lodge Apparel landing page on the Lodge of Honour website, supported by a custom merchandise ordering facility on Colour My Days. The solution brings together product presentation, customisation, ordering, payment processing and fulfilment in one connected customer journey.
1. A Dedicated Custom Lodge Apparel Page
The project began with a dedicated long-form sales page designed to explain the service, showcase the garments and guide visitors through the customisation and ordering process. The page uses a combination of lifestyle photography, product imagery, garment specifications and clear calls to action. Rather than simply listing products, the page explains how Lodges can create their own personalised clothing and highlights the benefits of ordering together.
Key elements include:
- Custom embroidery: Each garment features a gold Square and Compass emblem accompanied by the customer’s own Lodge name and number.
- Choice of apparel: Visitors can explore fitted polo shirts, classic pullover hoodies and crewneck sweatshirts.
- Colour and size options: Multiple garment colours and sizes are available to accommodate different members.
- Bulk ordering: The service is structured around group purchases, with a minimum order of 10 garments.
- Cost savings: Design and digitisation fees are waived for qualifying orders of 10 or more items.
- Simple ordering instructions: A three-step process explains how to place an order, approve the design and receive the finished apparel.
The page is designed to appeal to both Lodge officers arranging purchases on behalf of their members and individuals looking to organise a coordinated order.
2. Personalisation: Making Each Lodge’s Apparel Unique
At the heart of the service is the ability to personalise each garment with an individual Lodge identity. The design combines two embroidered elements:
- The traditional Square and Compass emblem in gold thread.
- The Lodge’s own name and number, incorporated into the embroidery.
This creates a distinctive piece of apparel that can be worn by members at Lodge meetings, official visits, charity events and social gatherings. The embroidery is deliberately restrained, maintaining a smart and understated appearance while giving each Lodge its own identity. The customisation service also makes the apparel suitable for commemorating important Lodge milestones, anniversaries and special occasions.
3. Three Garment Options
The initial custom apparel range comprises three versatile garment styles.
1. Men’s Fitted Polo Shirt
A smart, contemporary polo with a tailored appearance, breathable cotton fabric and classic button placket. Suitable for Lodge meetings, official visits and everyday smart casual wear.
2. Classic Pullover Hoodie
A comfortable, heavier-weight hoodie featuring a double-lined hood, matching drawstring and front pouch pocket. Available in a selection of colours, making it suitable for casual Lodge events and social occasions.
3. Classic Crewneck Sweatshirt
A versatile crewneck sweatshirt offering a comfortable fit and easy layering. Designed for everyday wear, work and informal Lodge gatherings.
All three options can be customised with the customer’s Lodge identity, providing a consistent appearance across different garment styles.
4. Integrated Online Ordering on Colour My Days
A major part of the project was developing the ordering infrastructure to support the customisation process. The promotional page on Lodge of Honour introduces the service and directs customers to the relevant product pages on the Colour My Days WooCommerce store.
The ordering facility supports the practical requirements of personalised merchandise, including:
- Selecting the preferred garment.
- Choosing available colours and sizes.
- Specifying the Lodge name and number.
- Submitting the customisation requirements.
- Completing the order and online payment.
The system also accommodates mixed sizes, colours and garment types within qualifying bulk orders. By connecting the Lodge website with a dedicated e-commerce platform, customers benefit from a clear separation between product promotion and the actual commercial ordering process.
5. Bespoke Online Order Form & Product Configuration
A key component of the project was the development of a dedicated online order form on the Colour My Days website, specifically designed to handle the requirements of custom Lodge apparel.
Unlike conventional online shopping, personalised bulk orders require additional information and coordination. Customers need to specify their Lodge details, select garment types and colours, provide quantities for different sizes and supply their billing and delivery information.
Xelium designed and developed a bespoke order form to bring all these requirements together in one place. The form allows customers to:
- Provide customer details: Enter their contact information, including name, email address and telephone number.
- Specify their Lodge identity: Submit the Lodge name and number, or an alternative inscription for a special event.
- Select garment types: Choose from fitted polo shirts, classic pullover hoodies and crewneck sweatshirts.
- Choose garment colours: Select from the available colour options for each garment style.
- Specify sizes and quantities: Refer to integrated size guides and provide a breakdown of quantities across the available sizes.
- Submit delivery details: Enter billing and shipping information for the completed order.
The form incorporates a minimum order requirement of 10 garments and provides garment-specific colour choices and detailed size guides, helping customers make informed selections before submitting their requirements.
Streamlining the Ordering Process
Developing a dedicated order form removes much of the administrative work traditionally associated with organising customised clothing for a Lodge. Instead of exchanging multiple emails to establish garment preferences, sizes, colours and embroidery details, customers can submit their requirements through a single structured online form.
Once submitted, the order details provide the information needed to prepare the personalised embroidery design, confirm the order specifications and progress towards production. Customers receive an invoice with payment details, with orders confirmed upon receipt of payment.
This approach provides a straightforward ordering experience while retaining the necessary checks and approval stages associated with personalised merchandise.
Designed for Group Orders
Particular attention was given to making the form suitable for Lodge representatives coordinating purchases on behalf of multiple members. The ability to specify quantities across different sizes and select garment colours makes it practical to organise a collective order without requiring every member to complete an individual purchase.
Combined with the design and digitisation fee waiver for qualifying orders of 10 or more garments, the system makes personalised Lodge apparel more accessible and affordable. The result is a purpose-built online ordering facility that connects customer requirements with the subsequent design, payment, production and delivery processes.
A Simple Three-Step Ordering Process
Custom merchandise can involve a considerable amount of correspondence, particularly when confirming designs, quantities, sizes and embroidery details.
The solution developed by Xelium simplifies this process into three straightforward stages.
Step 1 – Place Your Order
Choose the garment styles, colours and sizes required, and submit the Lodge name and number for customisation.
Step 2 – Approve the Design
A personalised embroidery proof is prepared for approval before production begins. This gives the customer an opportunity to check the Lodge details and design layout.
Step 3 – Production & Delivery
Once the design has been approved, the order proceeds to production. The completed garments are then dispatched to the customer.
This structured process gives customers greater confidence in ordering personalised merchandise and reduces the administrative work involved in coordinating group purchases.
Better Value for Bulk Orders
The service has been structured to make custom apparel accessible to Lodges ordering together. A design and digitisation fee normally applies when creating a new embroidered design. However, this fee is waived for qualifying orders of 10 or more garments.
Customers also benefit from reduced delivery costs when ordering multiple items for delivery to the same address. The ability to combine different sizes, colours and garment types within an order makes it easier for Lodge representatives to coordinate purchases without requiring every member to buy identical garments.
Supporting Masonic Charitable Causes
As with the lifestyle apparel collection, the custom merchandise initiative also has a charitable dimension. A portion of the proceeds from purchases is donated by Lodge of Honour No. 379 towards the Somerset 2031 Festival, supporting the Masonic Charitable Foundation.
The initiative provides participating Lodges with an opportunity to purchase personalised apparel while contributing towards a wider charitable objective. The charitable commitment is highlighted on the promotional page, making it an integral part of the merchandise offering.
The Results
Xelium delivered a dedicated custom merchandise and ordering solution that extends the Lodge of Honour merchandise initiative beyond ready-designed products.
The project provides:
- A dedicated customisation platform: A purpose-built landing page explaining the personalisation service and available products.
- Individual Lodge branding: The ability to incorporate Lodge names and numbers into gold embroidered designs.
- Multiple garment options: Polo shirts, hoodies and crewneck sweatshirts.
- Flexible bulk ordering: Support for different garment sizes, colours and styles within qualifying orders.
- A structured approval process: Customers can review and approve their embroidery design before production.
- Integrated online payments: Customers can complete their purchases through the connected WooCommerce store.
- End-to-end fulfilment: Orders progress from online purchase through design approval, production and delivery.
- A scalable service: The platform can serve Lodge of Honour and other Lodges looking for personalised apparel.
Most importantly, the solution removes much of the complexity traditionally associated with organising customised clothing for a group. Lodge representatives can coordinate an order, submit their requirements and manage the purchasing process online, with the production and delivery arrangements handled through the merchandise operation.
Looking Ahead
The Custom Lodge Apparel service provides a foundation for expanding personalised merchandise beyond the initial three garment styles. There is potential to introduce additional apparel, commemorative clothing and customised merchandise for Lodge anniversaries, installations, official visits, charity events and other special occasions.
The same approach can also be extended to other membership organisations and groups looking for coordinated, personalised merchandise without having to manage their own production and fulfilment arrangements.
By bringing together website design, product personalisation, e-commerce and fulfilment, Xelium has helped turn a simple merchandise idea into a practical online service for Lodges across the wider Masonic community.
